The Ethics Team

Yea-Lan Chiang, Ethics Officer, has worked extensively in support of children, having served previously as the Director of Policy and Planning for the Children’s Planning Council, as Executive Director to an educational nonprofit, as head of Public Programs for the Tech Museum in San Jose, and as a high school teacher in Boston. Chiang was also a management consultant for Monitor Group, helping Fortune 500 companies to develop strategies for improving their organizational performance. A proud former graduate of LAUSD, Chiang received her B.A. and teacher’s certification from Harvard and her Master's in Public Affairs from Princeton University.

Current Interns

Samantha Beatty, Ethics Intern, is a senior and Presidential Scholar at the University of Southern California, majoring in Political Science with a minor in cinema/television and a certificate from the Institute of Multimedia Literacy. Samantha is continuing her internship after having returned from studying abroad in the U.K. Samantha hails from Chandler, AZ (a suburb of Phoenix) where she received her International Baccalaureate diploma from Chandler High School. Post-college, Samantha plans to attend law school and then eventually seek a career in public office.

Daniel Cheung, Ethics Intern, is a senior at the University of California, Los Angeles pursuing a degree in English with a minor in Philosophy. He is currently applying his studies to develop training and reference materials for the Ethics Office. He is also working on to promote collegiate awareness of the need for ethics in public service. In addition to his internship, Daniel works with students through a local youth choir and through a five-day camp that encourages students to be leaders in their communities. Daniel is a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta, CA. Upon graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in teaching and educational policy.

Heather Haselwood, Ethics Intern, is a senior at the University of Southern California who is double majoring in International Relations and Fine Arts with a painting emphasis. Heather is applying her extensive graphic design skills toward helping the Ethics Office develop new communication tools that convey complex public integrity concepts in simpler and more intuitive terms. She designed the “Top 5 Ways to Teach Ethics” artwork that the Ethics Office is now sharing with senior managers. Beyond school and her internship work, Heather is very active as president of her sorority. Heather is a graduate from Mark Keppel High School in Monterey Park, CA. She is still considering post-graduate options but is definitely interested in exploring a future career in the public sector.

Jamal Haskin, Ethics Intern, is a senior at California State University, Northridge who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in software engineering. Through school and outside projects, Jamal has acquired experience programming in C++, Java, JavaScript, HTML, PHP and mySQL and working with Dreamweaver and Visual C++. His skills are being applied to the Ethics Office’s website and other web-based applications (i.e. Electronic Lobbying Filing System and the Form 700 management system).
